A no-fluff intro to typography that won’t make your eyes glaze over

Fonts do more than just “look nice.” They set the tone, shape perception, and help people recognize your brand at a glance. If your fonts feel off, chances are your whole brand feels a little off too.

Let’s walk through the basics of typography and how to choose the right fonts for your business—no design degree required.

What Is Typography, Exactly?

Typography is how text looks and behaves… from the fonts you use to the size, spacing, and how it’s arranged. Good typography isn’t just pretty; it improves readability and reinforces your message.

At the heart of it all: typefaces, often just called “fonts.” These come in a few main styles:

  • Serif: Fonts with small decorative lines on the ends (like Times New Roman or Merriweather). They feel classic, trustworthy, and traditional.
  • Sans Serif: Clean, modern fonts without those extra strokes (like Arial or Montserrat). They’re approachable, minimal, and often easier to read on screens.
  • Script: Handwritten or cursive-style fonts. Great for personality and flair… but best used sparingly.
  • Display/Decorative: Unique fonts designed to make a visual statement. Fun, bold, but not great for body text.

What Should You Look for in a Brand Font?

Think about your brand’s personality. What do you want people to feel when they land on your site or see your materials?

Ask yourself:

  • Does this font reflect who I am and who I serve?
  • Is it easy to read at different sizes (especially on mobile)?
  • Does it work well in both print and digital formats?

You’ll usually want two to three fonts:

  1. A primary font for headings or logos (this one can show off a little)
  2. A secondary font for body text (this one needs to be super readable)
  3. (Optional) An accent font for small highlights, quotes, or CTAs

Font Pairing 101

The key to pairing fonts is contrast and balance. You want styles that complement each other without clashing.

Try:

  • A bold serif header + a clean sans serif body (classic and modern)
  • A fun display font for titles + a neutral sans serif to keep things grounded
  • Avoid pairing two similar fonts… it just feels muddy, not intentional

Tip: Google Fonts is a great, free place to explore font pairings.

A Few of My Favorite Combos

If you need a jumping-off point:

  • Merriweather + Montserrat (yep, my go-to combo… elegant and clean)
  • Playfair Display + Source Sans Pro (sophisticated but easy to read)
  • Raleway + Roboto (sleek and modern)

One Last Thing: Be Consistent

Your fonts should show up the same way across your website, social posts, emails, and printed materials. Consistency builds trust and brand recognition… even if no one notices it directly.

If choosing fonts has you spinning in circles, don’t worry. You don’t have to go it alone. I help small businesses build brand identities that feel like them, fonts included.
