Every designer has their own little quirks before diving into a project. For me, starting fresh isn’t about staring at a blank screen… it’s about setting the right mood, clearing the mental clutter, and giving myself space to actually think before I create.

Here’s a peek at the creative rituals I use to get into flow before I start a new design project.

1. Clearing My Space (and My Head)

I can’t focus if my desk is a disaster. So before opening up any design files, I do a quick tidy—coffee mugs back to the kitchen, notebooks stacked, sticky notes sorted. A clear space helps me get into a clear headspace.

2. Music On, Distractions Off

The right playlist sets the tone. Sometimes it’s chill lo-fi beats, sometimes it’s old-school hip hop, and sometimes it’s complete silence. I also shut off notifications so I’m not tempted to check emails or messages.

3. Reviewing Client Notes and Strategy

Before touching design tools, I reread the client’s notes, brand guidelines, or mood boards. It reminds me of the bigger picture so I don’t get lost in making something that “looks cool” but doesn’t fit their goals.

4. Sketching First, Designing Second

Even though I’m a digital designer, I usually start with pen and paper. Quick doodles, rough layouts, or mind maps help me get ideas out without overthinking. It’s messy… but it’s where the good stuff usually starts.

5. Coffee (Always Coffee)

A warm cup is part ritual, part fuel. There’s just something about sipping while sketching that makes me feel grounded and ready.

PS – I got the plug on the coffee.

Why These Rituals Matter

Creativity doesn’t just “happen.” It comes from setting the stage… making space, cutting distractions, and reminding myself that design is more than making things pretty. It’s about intention.

By the time I open Illustrator, Photoshop, or Canva, I’m not just starting cold. I’ve already built the momentum.

What about you? Do you have little rituals or habits you lean on before doing something creative?
