Accessibility professional Jennison Asuncion connected with Devon on that idea, and together they launched GAAD in May 2012.

Since then, GAAD has grown into a global observance held every year on the third Thursday of May, with virtual and in-person events across dozens of countries.

The purpose is simple: to get everyone (designers, developers, organizations, and everyday people_ talking, thinking, and learning about digital access and inclusion for the more than one billion people worldwide living with disabilities.

This year’s theme is “Design, Develop, Deliver,” a call to make accessibility an integral part of every stage of the creative and technical process, not an afterthought or a compliance checkbox.

Where nth degree Stands

Accessibility isn’t a new addition to what I do here, it’s core to how I think about design, communication, and whose needs get centered.

My background is in disability rights advocacy, and that shapes every project I take on.

But commitment without action is just a stance.

Over the past year, I’ve made a deliberate effort to deepen both my knowledge and my practice.

“Going All In on Accessibility:” The Blog Series

This past April, I published a series of posts here under the title Going All In on Accessibility.

The series covered:

What ADA compliance actually means for websites and digital content

Why overlay tools and quick-fix plugins fall short of real accessibility

Testing tools and how to use them to identify real barriers

Core accessible design principles that don’t require a developer to start implementing

The goal of the series was to make accessibility knowledge more accessible… to help clients and colleagues understand not just that accessibility matters, but why and how to start acting on it.

Joining IAAP

Most recently, I took a step I’ve been working toward for a while: I’ve officially joined the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) as a professional member.

IAAP is an international association of organizations and professionals working in the accessibility space, a community of practitioners committed to advancing accessibility knowledge, credentials, and standards across industries.

Being part of that network connects the work I do here in Kansas City to a broader professional community with real depth and rigor.

What’s Ahead

I’ll continue building accessibility audits and testing into client projects, staying current on WCAG guidelines and assistive technology, and sharing what I learn here.

If you work with me, accessibility isn’t an upsell… it’s part of how I approach the work.

And if your organization has a website and you’re not sure whether it’s accessible, that’s a great place to start.

Alcanzar. Let’s talk about what “accessible” actually looks like for your users.

Happy Global Accessibility Awareness Day to the designers, developers, advocates, and users who keep pushing the web forward!

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, and this year marks the 15th annual celebration!
