Let’s be honest: you didn’t start your business because you’re obsessed with keywords, meta descriptions, or Google algorithms.

You started it because you create. You design, write, build, photograph, coach, or make something magical. And yet… Here we are, talking about SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

The good news? You don’t need to be an expert to get the basics right. A few intentional tweaks can make a big difference… without sucking the soul out of your website.

Here’s a simple breakdown of SEO basics for creatives who’d really rather be designing.

1. Start With the Words People Actually Use

Think of SEO as helping people find you by using the words they’re already typing into Google.

Skip the industry lingo and get clear on:

  • What your ideal clients are searching for
  • What problems they’re trying to solve
  • How you describe your services in plain English

Example: Instead of “elevated visual identity systems” → Try “custom logo and branding for small businesses”

2. Each Page Should Focus on One Thing

Every page on your website should have a clear focus. That means:

  • One main keyword/topic per page
  • A clear headline that tells visitors (and search engines) what the page is about
  • Consistent messaging from top to bottom

If your homepage, about page, and services page all try to say everything, Google won’t know what to rank you for, and your audience might bounce.

3. Use Your Keywords in Smart Places

Once you know what your focus keyword is, make sure it shows up in:

  • Your page title (the one that shows up in Google search results)
  • Your main headline (usually the big text at the top of the page)
  • A few times in the body text
  • The image file names and alt text
  • The URL or permalink, if possible (like: /brand-design-for-coaches)

BUT don’t force it. If it sounds awkward, leave it out. Human-first, Google-second.

4. Write Like a Real Person (for Real People)

Good SEO writing isn’t robotic. You don’t need to repeat your keywords 17 times. You just need to make your content clear, helpful, and relevant.

Answer questions your ideal client is actually asking. Be specific. Use the words they’d use. Google’s algorithm is smart, but your clients are smarter.

5. Mobile-Friendly & Fast = Non-Negotiable

Google (and humans) won’t stick around if your site is slow or doesn’t work on phones.

Make sure:

  • Your site loads quickly
  • Your layout looks good on mobile
  • Buttons and text are easy to click and read

Bonus: clean design is good SEO. It keeps people on your site longer and improves your credibility.

6. Blogging Helps (Even If You Don’t Love It)

You don’t need to write weekly novels. Just answer your clients’ questions.

Think:

  • “What should I include on my homepage?”
  • “How much does custom branding cost?”
  • “How do I choose colors for my brand?”

Each blog post is a chance to rank for new keywords and build trust with potential clients… before they even reach out.

TL;DR: SEO = Be Clear + Be Findable

You don’t need to become an SEO expert to benefit from SEO.

You just need to:

  • Use real words your people are searching for (Pro tip: use AnswerThePublic or Google Trends to find out if you’re not sure)
  • Be clear and consistent with your messaging
  • Structure your pages with intention
  • Make your site user-friendly
  • Keep creating helpful content over time
